The Gift of the Magi
The "Gift of the Magi" is a story written by O. Henry, and it was first published in 1905.
Sacrifice and true love is the key to being happy. Enjoying every moment along with your ideal partner for the rest of your life it's somehow a perfect near future. I chose this story because it took me into a whole world of profound thoughts, where I can rely on this beautiful theme, involving the most important part of life which is doing your best for love and getting away from materialistic ideas.
The story starts by introducing a lovely couple, in the Christmas season. Both tried to give the other one a beautiful present, as a Christmas gift.
In the beginning, Della is crying because she doesn't have enough money to buy Jim a present. Likewise, Jim doesn't have enough money to buy a beautiful present for Della.
So, the most viable way of solving this conflict is to sell their most valuable possessions, both decided to sell them, which were Della's hair and Jim's golden watch. Della bought a silver chain to complement its husband's gold watch. Jim bought some combs to complement Della's beautiful hair. However, Della sold her hair and Jim sold the gold watch.
In the end, we notice how both unconsciously sold their possessions that complement each other's gifts and both decided to take them away for some time.
I think this story is the perfect representation of the chrismast essence, when everyone wants to give something to their beloveds. Love is one of the biggest forces in this world , it makes us get in many troubles or being in hard situations, in this case, it cost them their most important object. I like that in the end they discover that the biggest gift the other one could give them, was their love. I like this story because it remembered my childhood when I use to watch chrismast movies with my mom. - Camila (che)
ReplyDeleteCarlos organized very well the information aboutthis story and expresses very well the feeling that the woman had for her husband by showing the love she has for her husband and at the same time demonstrates the irony presented by her husband at the end by saying the phrase "they are very good to use them now".In conclusion carlos made a very good job summarizing this story, in conclusion he deserves 15 pts.
