Sonderkommando

We all know the terrible unprecedented events and how people suffered because of Adolf Hitler's cruelty.
Sonderkommando is a story written by Gar Metz set during World War II, that tells us about a slave little boy who is forced to do some heavy work, like incinerating, carrying corpses, and cleaning the chambers.
If the guy refuses to work it would exacerbate the Nazi's cruel treatment, even with the workers.
One day, he makes a deal with the lieutenant, in order to save a girl. He recognized the girl as an angel during that day in Amsterdam. He and his father were in Amsterdam, and he was starving (he lost his lunch), so the girl offered him a sandwich saying: "You need it more than I do".
So, the deal was about an exchange, the little boy would die instead of the young lady.
He was, somehow, just being grateful!

I chose this story because I love the way the author describes those historical events. He, of course, cares about saving human lives but disagrees with the way the Nazis treated those innocents by telling us true evidence about kindness, generosity, and gratefulness.
It is a beautiful theme and it helped me learn more about such a historical event: World War II.
